Why Martin Luther King Jr. Day Is Important To Our SPAAR DEI Committee?
Each year, SPAAR's DEI Chair is invited to share their thoughts on Martin Luther King Jr. This year, Committee Chair Adriana Martinez shared MLK's importance to SPAAR's DEI Committee. Adriana is also the current president of NAHREP-TC.

Why Martin Luther King Jr. Day is important to our SPAAR DEI committee? Simple! Because we look for Better Agents and Better Communities, promoting homeownership and protecting private property rights for all.
The SPAAR Committee for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) serves as an advocate of fair housing practices and promotes equal opportunities in housing and further diversification within the real estate industry to better serve association members and their communities, and aims to increase opportunities for members to actively participate and provide education to support the real estate industry.
How can we achieve this? We are a world of infinite treasures, some of us just don’t know about it. We have all the talent and world wisdom that we have accumulated for centuries! But why is that we still have wars and fight for everything? Is that because we found ourselves so different from others? Perhaps, but what many of us don’t realize is that each little difference is a gem, and that we are surrounded by the biggest treasure we ever imagine to find!
Right now we are in a time and place where we have all the resources next to us! Yes, we have them at the reach of our hands! Our colleagues, our neighbors, our service providers! All and each of them have something wonderful to offer and if we open our hearts and mind just a little bit, we will learn things that even if we were the most avid readers we would never find.
Yes, the world has advanced thanks to the communications technology, but can you imagine how much we can achieve if we understood more about other cultures, ways of life and different ways of thinking? I dream of a world that someday (hopefully soon) we all live in harmony and see each other as a wonderful source of knowledge, courage, resilience, compassion and love.
Just as Martin Luther King Jr. put it:
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
We have the power to do and achieve incredible and amazing things and it is not as hard as you may think! We just have to be curious and let that curiosity lead us to reach to our colleagues, neighbors and community! You will see that doing so, it will open the doors to all those wonderful and desired hidden treasures!
