Susan Gonyea has been named SPAAR Hero for April 2019

Sue's experience as educator and passion for community service encourages the next generation of volunteers.

SPAAR - 12/09/2020

Susan Gonyea, a REALTOR® with Gonyea Properties, Inc., is SPAAR Hero for April 2019. Sue has been successful in bringing her experience as an educator and passion for community service is recognized as SPAAR Hero for her work to educate and encourage the next generation of volunteers.

Before becoming a REALTOR®, Sue was an educator for 20 years, teaching kindergarten through 5th grade in a Montessori School and serving as a math and instructional specialist.  Sue made a point of incorporating education about social justice into her classroom, by introducing her students to service opportunities that have impacted their communities.

Through the Gonyea Foundation, Sue continues to work with many former students to help them find ways to get involved. The 25 or so students meet every month to work on a community project and some of the students have been part of this group for five years. Examples of the projects the group has created include crafting blankets for families in Guatemala; assembling toiletry kits and collecting coats for people who are homeless; making and selling jars of candy to support education for girls in Africa; and visiting nursing home residents.

Congratulations, Sue, for being named SPAAR Hero for April 2019!  You are helping young people build better communities!
