SPAAR Hero Karen Stang believes volunteerism is key to community success

SPAAR - 11/28/2022

Karen Stang grew up the daughter of a Realtor®. Her father suggested she get her real estate license for educational purposes and once she was licensed, he put her to work.

Despite a good work ethic, Karen’s parents also instilled in her the importance of giving back, which she has carried forward over the years both personally and professionally.

It’s these volunteer endeavors for which Karen has been recognized a SPAAR Hero, specifically for her work with United Way Washington County East where she’s volunteered for many years.

“I have served on a few committees, and volunteer at their partner organizations in addition to advocate for them,” said Karen, referring to some of the United Way Washington County East supported nonprofits as well as Valley Outreach, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Humane Society and more. “I am honored to be named a SPAAR Hero; however, I think everyone should get involved in volunteer work whether they are recognized or not. It just feels good to be able to give back to our communities!”

Karen stressed that helping people in need is key to any community’s success. For a community’s overall well-being and safety, support is needed in areas such as housing, food, clothing, mental health and more. She added that communities need these resources, often made possible through volunteerism, to stay healthy and thrive.

“My grandparents struggled, and I think everyone has their ups and downs,” added Karen, who squeezes in volunteer opportunities a few times each month. “Being there for people when they are struggling is not only needed, but it’s the right thing to do.”

When Karen isn’t busy with work at Carriage Realty in Lake Elmo, the city where she also resides with her husband, daughter and two cats, she enjoys yoga, biking, dogs as well as a good cup of coffee and being a foodie.

Congratulations, Karen, on being named a SPAAR Hero and for your volunteer contributions to your community.
