SPAAR REALTOR® members partner with the community to address food insecurity
St. Paul Area Association of REALTOR® (SPAAR) members, faith community leaders and Meals from the Heart staff came together on Aug. 2 and packed 11,664 meals for distribution to local Twin Cities food shelves to help address the issue of food insecurity.
The event was a kick off for the upcoming St. Paul Side by Side event taking place September 15-16 where 1,000 people are expected to gather and pack meals that will provide food for local families via area food shelves such as Ruby’s Pantry.
REALTORS® are known for helping people buy and sell homes, but they’re also invested in the communities where they live and work. In June, SPAAR members granted Stillwater-based Meals from the Heart $50,000 for the St. Paul Side by Side meal-packing event that will stock local food shelves with 250,000 meals.
“Many of SPAAR’s 7,300 REALTOR® members are active in volunteer and philanthropic efforts where they live and work, and we want to give back to an organization that makes an impact to people in their communities,” said Man Huynh, president of SPAAR. “For that reason, it was easy to support Meals from the Heart. The upcoming St. Paul Side by Side event allows SPAAR members to participate alongside those from the participating churches and local communities.”
Food insecurity can happen to anyone at any time; in fact, 19.7 percent of the population in Ramsey and Washington counties alone is food insecure. It impacts more than 84,000 people right here in our communities.
