Government Affairs Update – Alex Gleeson
February 18, 2020
The Saint Paul Area Association of REALTORS® (SPAAR) advocates every day on behalf of more than 7000 REALTORS® to promote homeownership in the Twin Cities. SPAAR promotes local policy initiatives that strengthen the ability of Minnesotans to own, buy, and sell real property.
SPAAR increased staff capacity in 2019, hiring two government affairs directors and partnering them with community engagement efforts, creating a robust Advocacy program. Association leadership pursued this change with the expectation that REALTORS® would have a larger presence in city halls and county courthouses throughout the region, and staff members have delivered.
When the advocacy team began their new roles last year they discovered that several of SPAAR’s position papers required updating. These policies are essential in the Association’s advocacy activities: they allow our members to speak with one voice to outline the REALTOR® perspective on policies affecting homeownership and private property rights.
In January, the SPAAR Board of Directors adopted revised statements on vacant properties, sustainability, and inclusion & non-discrimination. These position papers, along with five others on our website, serve as useful guides to policymakers and political candidates as they consider what REALTORS® believe are in the best interests of our clients and neighbors.
As we head into an important election year, I’m grateful that our Association can count on our staff. Working together with members, they will continue to proactively position REALTORS® as champions of our communities.
