Diversity Committee Presents Donation To Bridging
November 13, 2020
DRESSER BUILD CANCELLED, NEED CONTINUES
Friday, November 20 was SUPPOSED to be SPAAR’s 8th annual Dresser Build with nonprofit Bridging, Inc. This volunteer event was cancelled in compliance with SPAAR’s cancellation of all in-person events through December 31 . SPAAR’s Community Engagement Committee coordinates the event which brings together more than 50 volunteers who assemble dressers for distribution to area families. Although Dresser Build was canceled, the committee approved contributing money budgeted for the event directly to Bridging. Sammi Cook-Kuehn delivered SPAAR’s check for $4,500.00 to Bridging on November 11. The funds will be used to purchase dresser kits which will be assembled by Bridging’s staff and core volunteers.
Twin Cities-based Bridging, Inc., provides new and gently-used furniture and household goods to families transitioning into long-term housing. These families are referred by social service agencies for a one-time shopping trip to select items they need to furnish their homes. Families served by Bridging may be escaping domestic abuse, transitioning from homelessness or recovering from personal crisis. Each family is working to put down roots in a new home and new community. Bridging serves 80 families each week.
Bridging has changed to continue to serve clients during the pandemic. Shopping appointments are conducted virtually or are provided by masked, tested volunteers. What has not changed is Bridging’s commitment to serving clients with respect and personal attention. Wendy Erickson, Bridging volunteer coordinator, notes, “We are seeing increased demand for services. Partner agencies are working hard to establish homes where they can shelter safely.”
