Advocacy Report – September 2020

September 2020

Every election cycle, SPAAR goes through a candidate endorsement process. Despite the chaotic nature of 2020, this year was no exception. The process began with a questionnaire that the SPAAR Advocacy Team put together and sent out to candidates for County Commissioner, Mayor, and City Council positions in SPAAR’s territory.

This questionnaire had a variety of questions, asking candidates about whether they have any REALTOR® support, their fundraising status, and their opinions on issues like point-of-sale inspections.

Nearly 80 candidates responded in some form or fashion to our questionnaire. The Advocacy Team determined, after review of each candidate’s submission, that 30 candidates were worth bringing in for a 20-minute interview with SPAAR members and staff. These interviews were conducted via Zoom during the afternoons of Sept. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. During the interviews, SPAAR members and staff questioned the candidates about their qualifications, their reasons for running for office, and of course, real estate industry and property rights related questions. At the end of each interview, the group would deliberate about the candidate and determine which would receive SPAAR’s endorsement.

With 48 short days until the election, be sure to check out the SPAAR Voter Guide for information including registration status, polling locations, special COVID-19 precautions, and any other material you may need.

Contact your friends, family, and coworkers to make sure they’re all registered to vote. Ensure that you have a safe, quick, and secure voting plan, especially if you are planning to vote by mail. On November 3rd, vote for yourself, your business, and your industry. It is your choice and your voice, so use it!
